Planned route

The 440 kilometer long NEL (Nordeuropäische-Erdgas-Leitung – North European Gas Pipeline) should be completed in 2012 and will then be used to transport Russian natural gas from the Nord Stream Baltic Sea pipeline landing point in Lubmin near Greifswald towards Rehden in Lower Saxony.

The NEL will link the Baltic Sea pipeline with the existing natural-gas transportation systems. The natural-gas pipeline will follow a route through the German federal states of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and Lower Saxony and will offer sufficient capacity to transport approximately 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The planning approval process is set to begin in 2009. Once it is complete, work to construct the NEL will begin. The majority of the building work will be carried out in 2011 and 2012.
